Take your ambitions further with the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR, a high-performance super-telephoto zoom lens that will answer your professional needs in any situation. Using a simple switch, its focal length range of 180-400mm expands to 560mm with the convenience of a built-in 1.4x teleconverter (TC), perfect for covering subjects of ranging distances easily on the field. Weighing just 3500g, its ease of use is accompanied by a steady reliability. You will always get the most out of your shoot, no matter the conditions. Fluorine coating on the lens reinforces dust and drip resistance, and contributes to a high antifouling performance. With the optical design providing exceptionally clear images of minimised ghosting and unwanted flare, and an improved autofocus (AF) tracking with an evolved Vibration Reduction (VR) performance for a faster and more precise focus on your images, the lens will quickly become a staple in your kit wherever you go.
Capture both near and distant subjects in the field with a single lens—the ultimate agility. Covering 180-400mm focal length, with an expanded 20mm on the wide-angle side1, a single push of a finger will extend it further to 252-560mm2 using the built-in 1.4x TC. If you’re looking to cover even further, simply attaching the lens to a DX-format camera super-extends the focal length equivalent to that of a 270-600mm lens in 35mm format; 378-840mm when using the built-in TC. With the smooth controls optimally designed according to shooting posture, your focus will remain uninterrupted throughout the day to help you get closer to capturing the perfect moments.
Every minute detail is yours to capture, with the highest maximum reproduction ratio of 0.25x3 at the minimum focus distance of 2m throughout the entire zoom range. Optimized perfectly for high-megapixel digital cameras, achieve high-resolution images across the entire frame regardless of focal length—even at the maximum aperture or when it is stopped down. The superior optical performance, with Nano Crystal Coat utilised to retain high transmittance, is crafted with 27 elements in 19 groups (including eight lens elements for TC) and one protective glass; which includes a fluorite lens element, and eight ED glass elements to give your images the absolute clarity they deserve.
Upgrades such as a higher-speed inversion AF drive and an enhanced drive control algorithm of the AF motor, for more accurate subject tracking based on AF detection, will help you easily follow fast-moving subjects of different speeds on the field. The high subject acquisition capability, even in the peripheral areas of the frame4, is boosted further with the evolved VR effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops5 faster regardless of the built-in TC usage. With VR [SPORT] mode in effect, keeping up with the quick and erratic movements of your subjects for an easier framing is a feat that you’ll be sure to appreciate.
1 As compared to the AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II.
2 When using the built-in teleconverter, the maximum aperture becomes f/5.6.
3 High reproduction ratio of 0.25x at minimum focus distance of 2m at the telephoto end when built-in teleconverter is not used; 0.36x with the built-in teleconverter.
4 When attached to the D5, D850, or D500, focus points located at outer areas of the 153-point autofocus system can be used as cross sensors for easier subject acquisition regardless of built-in teleconverter usage. (Note: this feature will be available with firmware to be released successively.)
5 Based on CIPA Standards.
6 Functions such as “AF-area mode switching” can be assigned (available with higher-class DSLRs including the D4S and later models).
7 The lens body including movable parts and other sections is designed considering dust- and drip-resistant performance to protect the inside of the lens against dust and water droplets.
1. Key Features
The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR is the first NIKKOR lens for Nikon SLR cameras that incorporates a 1.4x teleconverter within the lens body. When the teleconverter is used, the maximum focal length of 400 mm on the telephoto side can be increased up to 560 mm. The wide focal-length coverage from 180 mm to 560 mm achieved with a single lens realizes outstanding agility.
* When attached to a DX-format camera, the angle of view is equivalent to that of a 270-600 mm lens in FX/35mm format (378-840 mm when using the built-in teleconverter).
Because the teleconverter switch can be operated while holding the camera grip, the focal length can be smoothly expanded with a simple operation without changing the shooting posture. This eliminates the need for lens change when a longer focal length is required, increasing your shooting possibilities.
Besides easy switching of the built-in teleconverter, the tripod collar, tripod collar ring and controls are all designed to ensure superior operability for more comfortable shooting. The employment of a fluorite lens element and magnesium alloy achieves a weight of approx. 3,500 g, lighter than the current 200-400 mm lens with an external 1.4x teleconverter, also contributing to agility.
The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR employs a dust- and drip-resistant structure for enhanced reliability. Movable parts and other sections are sealed to protect the inside of the lens against dust and water droplets. Fluorine coat, that effectively repels dust or dirt, is applied to the front surface of the protective glass to ensure high antifouling performance. These features enable photographers to continue shooting regardless of weather or environmental conditions.
With one fluorite lens element and eight ED glass elements, the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR provides high-resolution images with minimal chromatic aberration stably across the entire frame even at the maximum aperture or when it is stopped down.
Clear images with minimized ghost and flare effects are realized through the combination of an excellent optical design, and Nikon’s superior coating technologies, including Nano Crystal Coat and other anti-reflective coatings.
The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops* faster in NORMAL mode, which remains unchanged even when using the built-in teleconverter. SPORT mode, adopted as an option of the VR function, is especially effective when shooting scenes in which subjects are quickly and erratically moving.
* Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when attached to an FX-format digital SLR camera, with zoom set at the maximum telephoto position
The enhanced drive control algorithm of the AF motor enables more accurate AF tracking based on AF detection results, even for moving subjects that radically change speed.
Even during high-speed continuous shooting, exposure is stably controlled with the adoption of an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism.
