Wild islands of the Galápagos: Evolution of life and my visual journey

I have always been inspired by change. Much like how life has evolved on the Galápagos archipelago, so has my experience with photography as a hobby, having progressed from film to owning my Nikon D90. Constantly on the lookout for new and thrilling photography experiences, my passion and wanderlust have brought me to this remote biological reserve off the coast of Ecuador with one goal in mind: To photograph a land, virtually untouched by mankind.

Caught in mid-flight: A lone Brown Pelican skims the water’s surface, just seconds before it dips beneath the sea’s surface to catch a passing fish.

The Galapagos is a visual treat. With the biggest island seven times the size of Singapore, but home to a population 200 times smaller, it’s surprisingly busy. Many of the islands’ wild inhabitants are curious and aren’t afraid to venture pretty close.

My recommendation: always be ready to snap away and look behind. If you’re only looking ahead, you’re bound to miss something.

A conversation on the rocks – a juvenile pelican and a Blue-footed Booby appear deep in conversation, perhaps they are discussing what’s for dinner tonight

That said, it is easy to be overwhelmed amidst the cacophony of barking sea lions and noisy sea birds. The challenge for any photographer is to be focused on his envisioned photo. Great composition then becomes key, as I began to isolate subjects and capture each creature’s unique personality and expressions.

A curious Galápagos tortoise looks on, wondering if I was food or a predator waiting to pounce.

It is places like this that inspire me to continue my discovery journey with photography. These furry and feathered islanders are products of millions of years of evolution, each one a story waiting to be written and captured.  Besides, where else in the world would an adorable sea lion pup sunbathe with a marine iguana?

Unlikely friends – A sea lion pup and a marine iguana make an adorable pair.
