Photography, My Great Escape

A friend once made an interesting remark while observing me shoot. As I set up my camera and prepared to take the shot, he said in an offhand tone, “Actually, I don’t understand why people bother with photography. For me, I just store the image in my mind.”

Art That Brings People Together

Of course, there’s something to be said for enjoying the moment, but then there’s also a place for art in this world, and as humans, what are we without art? For my part, I believe that photography is one of the most fulfilling passions one can pursue, whether one aims to become a seasoned enthusiast or take things even further as a professional. The journey to becoming a good photographer is as great an experience as the destination.

Photos are memories, and preserving them demands both refined skills and reliable tools. I started out with a point-and-shoot camera, but realized that I was outgrowing it pretty quickly. So I took the plunge and purchased my first Nikon DSLR 3 years ago, and I’ve never looked back. I’ve since come to be part of a community, and enjoy regular photography outings with my awesome photo-kakis!

Finding My Niche

These days, I dabble in all genres of photography - my favourite being landscape photography. My favourite time to shoot is during golden hour. The quietness of the pre-dawn moments really allows me to appreciate the subtle shades of yellow and fiery reds over the horizon as the sun rises. Such moments often go unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of getting ready for the day, and capturing them constantly reminds me to take a step back and enjoy the view.

There is so much one can learn from landscape photography. For example, the reflection of a landmark is best when the water is very still and calm. Like a bridge with interesting structure or illuminated buildings, or a marina with a few boats. I like incorporating interesting elements into the foreground to add perspective and depth to the overall image. Depending on how I prefer to craft my image, I may also choose to lower my tripod for a lower shooting angle.

The world continues to rush by, and there is much to do in this life. But when a space presents itself in this great rat race, I will always look to photography and landscapes as my great escape.
